Learning The Hosiery Differences

There are plenty of different types of hosiery out there, and we at Hosieree.com want to break it down for you so you always know what type of hosiery you should wear and what type you’re wearing! The world of hosiery really isn’t overly complex or difficult, it only takes learning a little bit about the different types of hosiery and what separate them from one another.

First, let’s start with the biggest staple of hosiery, and that’s pantyhose. Some common characteristics of panty hose are a sheer or ultra-sheer quality, a denier less than 40, and high versatility, but modern hosiery advancements have allowed us to have strong pantyhose with a slightly higher denier while still allowing them to have a certain sheer quality. In terms of how you’d wear pantyhose, there really is no wrong occasion, and this is your go-to everyday hosiery to wear.

After pantyhose comes tights, and tights can be thought of as an opposite of pantyhose in terms of sheer quality and denier. Tights aren’t the type of hosiery you’ll want to break out in the summer, as their thickness can provide excess coverage and warmth you don’t really want during the warm weather seasons. During the winter and fall, however, tights are a fabulous way to get warmth and fashion in one hosiery piece! Tights will typically have a denier of 40 or higher, so you’re really working with a significantly more opaque option.

Stockings come in varieties that are quite opaque, like tights, or ultra-sheer, like pantyhose, but what sets these aside is their need of a belt. If hosiery requires a belt or set of suspenders to be kept up, regardless of denier, they are considered tights.

Lastly, we have thigh highs, which end at the thigh like stockings but do not require a belt to be kept up. The top portion of the thigh high keeps the hosiery up on its own, and thigh highs have just as much versatility as stockings do in terms of sheer and opaque varieties. With short skirts or shorts, opaque thigh highs are really in trend this fall/winter season.

When you’re able to tell each type of hosiery apart, you’re able to know what type is appropriate for what occasion and just how to wear your hosiery to maximize your look.
