How To Wash Your Hosiery

How To Wash Your Hosiery At Hosieree.com, we get asked quite often about how to wash hosiery. Fine hosiery like the selections we offer are made to last, but like any delicate piece of clothing or accessory, incorrect washing can shorten your hosiery’s lifespan significantly. Fine hosiery differs from the hosiery you may find in plastic containers at the grocery store or drug store in that it’s made to last for quite some time, while the latter selection is really built for disposable use. With fine hosiery, proper washing must be taken care of to ensure you’re getting the maximum bang for your hosiery buck.

The first step in washing your hosiery is filling up your sink, a small basin, or the tub. Using gentle warm water, you want to hand wash your hosiery as a cycle through a washing machine will often be too rough for fine hose. After you have your water ready, it’s then time to add a bit of gentle cleanser to the water to ensure the hosiery will be thoroughly cleaned. During this step, we don’t recommend using a standard laundry detergent as it may be too harsh, but a baby shampoo, hosiery specific soap, or detergent meant for babies as well.

Once your hosiery is submerged, use your hands to work the water through your hosiery gently and thoroughly. You’ll want to make sure the water has filled and gone through the fabric of the hosiery to ensure a proper clean, and then you’ll want to allow the hosiery to soak for around 5 to 10 minutes in the water and gentle cleanser mixture. This soaking process is what will really allow your hosiery to get a complete clean, and the right gentle cleanser will allow your hosiery to be cleaned without facing damage or deterioration.

Once the soaking period is finished, squeeze the water from your hose, but never wring them out. Wringing out wet hosiery like you’d ring out a towel or other article of clothing can actually break the fibers of the hose, so a gentle squeeze is really all that is necessary. Once they’re squeezed out, rinse the cleanser by gentling passing the hosiery through cool running water, and finish off by laying them into a towel. With the towel, don’t roll or twist the hosiery, but press the towel with some force to allow the excess moisture to be absorbed, then hang the hosiery on a rack with the towel to allow for a complete air dry.
