How To Avoid Runners In Your Hosiery

How To Avoid Runners In Your HosieryHosiery runs can put a damper on any evening and any outfit, and you may be surprised at just how easily these can show up in even your most high quality pieces of hosiery. A run, or a runner, is a damaged tear area in a pair of hose that is visible to the eye, and if even a small run pops up in your hosiery, it can become a big deal by the end of the day. Runners in hosiery tend to expand with each tug and movement of the fabric, causing what was once a small damage spot to be a huge damage spot in just a few movements.

The steps you can take to avoiding runners in your hosiery are:

  1. Examine your hosiery regularly – Runners will typically start from a small snag area or damaged spot within a pair of hose that is not necessarily visible unless you’re looking specifically for it. By taking your hosiery and inspecting it closely, you can typically spot these damage areas susceptible to becoming runs quite easily, and from there you can begin to make a quick repair in order to avoid the snag becoming a run.
  2. Get out your top coat – Your favorite top coat that you go to each time you’re looking to do an at-home manicure can also be your favorite hosiery repair tool. When inspecting your hosiery, take the top coat and put a small amount of the polish onto the damaged area of the hose. It’s important to place your hand inside of the hose to create a barrier from the polish leaking through to the other side and sticking the sides together. A single thin layer is all it takes, and once this is dry, you may put another layer on if you feel it’s necessary.
  3. Dry time – As the thin layer of polish dries, keep your hand in place so the panty hose won’t stick, and wait for about 3 to 5 minutes for the layer to dry completely. You can check this using your other hand and making sure there is no tacky or sticky area where you placed the polish.
  4. Ready to go – Put on your panty hose and check the damaged area specifically, making sure that the polish is invisible and the damage appears to be fixed.

If you happen to find yourself with a small runner while out and about, you can also use a thin layer of aerosol hairspray to keep the runner from expanding, and keeping a small bottle in your handbag is a great idea just in case this happens while you’re going about your day.
