How To Approach Wearing Hosiery With Open Toed Shoes

For a long time, wearing hosiery with open toed shoes was viewed as a faux pas. However, if you’ve witnessed the runway trends from the last few years, you’ll know that this is a faux pas no more. Chic, edgy, and modern brands are showing all types of looks pairing hosiery with open toed shoes, and this is a trend that is more accessible than you may think. Pairing hosiery with open toed shoes can give you a whimsical and different sort of look, and all you have to do is know how to approach the trend with modern style.

First and foremost, this is not a trend for your nude or sheer hosiery. In spring and summer, you may think that this means you can finally pair those nude sheer hose with strappy sandals, but this isn’t what the trend is all about. Sheer hosiery is supposed to provide the look of a perfect smooth leg, and strappy heels are supposed to show off the curve of the natural foot, so having the appearance of hosiery popping at the foot ruins both of these benefits at the same time. When pairing hosiery with open toed shoes, stick to your more opaque styles.

What you can do is play with a little contrast. Taking an opaque pair of hose in a bold color, like our Classic Opaque Tights Freedom in Baccus or Abricot, and pairing these with open toed shoes of another solid color gives you a whole new take on color blocking. This isn’t a look reserved only for solid colored shoes, and a red pair of opaque hose looks particularly striking with a pair of chunky open toed leopard platforms, for example.

Patterned tights can really make a splash in strappy open toed shoes, but as long as you remember to vary the pattern size to contrast with the shoe. For example, if you have a pump with very thin straps and lots of them, you’ll want to pair them with a patterned pair of tights that use a big bold pattern, and if you have a pair with thicker straps and fewer of them, you will want to pair with a tight with a smaller busier pattern. Doing this ensures your look never becomes “too much” and stays perfectly balanced.

  1. Q: Are open toe sandals and similar open shoes appropriate in conjunction with hosiery?
A: That is dependent upon the situation and perhaps the employer.
Many people have conflicting opinions on this . Also the event and weather may be a issue. In summer sandals are popular but unless you live in Canada or cold climates few probably would be inclined to include hosiery in 90 degree weather. -However most offices have air conditioning set at 60 degrees. Preferences vary depending on tastes. Reinforced toe pantyhose would not suit open toe sandals particularly. I keep my pedicures regularly in tip top shape. So showing your best foot forward is my saying.

  2. I personally think that open toe sandals are more for summer. But if the shoe fits try it.

  3. Eastern European women seem to have an opposite opinion. Shunning opaques, they have no problem wearing sheer styles, especially in black or suntan colors, with open-toe high heels. No toe reinforcement in the tights ensures a clean look. Young women often combine the style with shorts instead of a skirt. Put together with the right mix of physique, shoe type and colors, the ensemble can be surprisingly flattering.
