5 Common Hosiery Questions Answered

5 Common Hosiery Questions Answered

While hosiery is a staple for many wardrobes, we still received a number of questions pertaining to hosiery and hosiery care. At Hosieree.com, we want to clear the fog from all of your hosiery questions, and make sure you feel confident and comfortable not just while you’re wearing your favorite hose, but when you take care of them as well. 5 common hosiery questions answered are:

1. What styles are best for hosiery beginners? – If you’re just starting out your hosiery collection, there are some styles that are considered staples or “musts”. We would suggest building your beginning foundation with a pair of clean nude hose and a pair of sexy black hose, like our Acapulco 7 Non-Slip Sole Pantyhose in nude and in black.

 2. How should I wash my hosiery? – This is one of the most common questions and concerns we get at Hosieree.com. Washing your hosiery, ideally, will be done by hand and in cool water, but we understand that washing by hand isn’t always feasible. If you must wash in a machine, place the hosiery in a hosiery or garment bag and wash on a delicate cycle in cool water. Hosiery should always be laid flat to dry, and never placed into the dryer.

3. How can I prevent runs and tears? – A run or a tear can ruin your hosiery, and if you’re investing in quality hose, you want to avoid this damage at all costs. The best way to avoid damaging your hosiery through everyday wear is simply to make sure you have the right fit. Hosiery that is too small will be pulled too tight, causing stress to the yarn of the hose, and therefore causing runs and tears. If you’re in between sizes, it’s always best to size up in your hosiery rather than size down.

 4. How can I fix a small tear? – If you find a small run or tear starting in your hose, you can save it from growing larger, and perhaps save the hose depending on where the tear is located. To do this, simply coat the hole completely with a couple of generous layers of clear nail polish. The nail polish will bond to the hosiery and protect the tear from stretching or growing.

 5. What does denier mean? – Denier is a word you’ll see quite a bit when shopping for hosiery, and the concept is actually quite simple. Denier refers to the weight of the hosiery, and tights that are more opaque in color, or those made to keep legs warm in the winter, will have a higher denier than a sheer pair of pantyhose.

  1. Great article even though I know the above already. It is great information for others that don’t know these tips. Small tear or snag I use to use clear nail polish until I came across Fabric Fusion at a fabric craft store.
