What Does Denier Mean?

What Does Denier Mean? There is a funny little word that you’ll see next to many of our various types of hosiery, and that word is “denier”. A number accompanying the word could go as high as 100, or as low as 6 or 7…so what does it all mean? What we do at Hosieree.com is bring to you the best hosiery for your particular need, and there is no way you’ll be able to choose just what’s best for you without getting to know a bit about your hosiery’s denier!

Denier refers to the thickness of your hosiery, but not just your hosiery, the actual nylon, wool, or other type of yarn your hosiery was woven from. Typically, the measurement is that 1 denier means 9,000 meters of the hosiery weighs 1 gram, and this goes up with the thickness of the hosiery yarn accordingly. Your most sheer and delicate hosiery will have the smallest denier, while your thicker and opaque wintertime hosiery or tights will have the highest. To feel the difference for yourself, pick up and feel a pair of summertime sheer hose, then pick up a pair of winter tights in the other hand and feel the difference.

If you’re looking for high denier options, look towards something like our 100 Denier Opaque Leggings. With a 100 denier, these are quite thick, and you’ll see that they’re completely opaque from top to bottom. These can be worn with tunics, skirts, or under jeans, and they’re meant to keep your legs covered, warm, and optimally supported.

On the other end of the scale, we have pieces like our Acapulco 7 Non-Slip Sole Pantyhose, which have only 7 denier. As they’re quite lightweight, they’re also quite sheer, and these are the types of hose you’re going to want to reach for if you’re dressing for a late springtime or summer event. When comparing them to something like our 100 Denier Opaque Leggings, you’ll be able to see and feel the denier difference rather dramatically and right away.

Just because one pair of hosiery has a higher denier, and one a lower, that doesn’t necessarily mean one is better than the other. Denier refers to weight and thickness, not quality, and there is a time and a place for a thicker denier hosiery piece and a time and place for thin. During the summer, you’ll be overheating and uncomfortable in a 100 denier tight, and in the winter you’ll get little cold protection from 7 denier hose.

At Hosieree.com, we have pieces of all deniers, and whether you’re looking for thick and cozy, or thin and breathable, we’ve got you covered. To see the denier difference, simply check out our selection at Hosieree.com today!
